Paulownia Estate is located a couple of kilometres east of central Masterton in the beautiful upper reaches of the Wairarapa Valley. Initially a dairy block when in 1995 Vaughan and Christine Paul purchased it with the aim of planting a small vineyard and contract growing for local wineries. In 1998 the first blocks of Riesling and Merlot were planted. Over the proceeding four years, blocks of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc were added to complete the nine hectare vineyard.
Their vineyard is on fertile alluvial loam soils overlying ancient river gravel and tends to be a little cooler than their southern neighbours, so bud-burst in spring is often a few days later and harvest can be two to three weeks later than in Martinborough. This additional time on the vine helps to ensure that their fruit develops strong varietal characteristics that are carried through to very distinctive wines.
Paulownia Estate Rosé is a blend of hand picked Pinot Noir and Merlot fruit. This is a summer wine that greets you with strawberries, both on the nose and in its long lingering finish. This Rosé is ideal as an aperitif, as an accompaniment to a lazy summer lunch or light dinner meal, or simply as a salute to summer at any time.
Paulownia Estate Sauvignon Blanc has been produced from hand picked grapes. It is a well balanced wine with citrus and gooseberry overtones and a soft but lingering acid finish in the traditional savvy style.
This Riesling has been produced from selectively hand picked grapes in an off dry style. It leads with hints of orange blossom on the nose followed by silky smooth peach and tropical fruit flavours with a lingering and appealing acidity.
