The fruit for this vintage was again hand harvested at perfect ripeness and processed in the finest French barriques following their traditional vinification processes. Coloured straw-yellow, this wine has a pleasant nose of spicy, nutty oak, overlaid with peaches and nectarines. This combination is carried through to the palate, producing the classic taste of ripe stone fruit with a hint of oak. Complexity was added through a secondary malolactic fermentation giving a lush, buttery finish to the wine. This wine remains true to the traditional characteristics of Chardonnay produced in the Gladstone, Wairarapa district.

The summer allowed the fruit to ripen slowly, producing powerful opulent flavours and a flinty mineral backbone which combine beautifully with barrel fermentation to create Burgundian inspired Chardonnay.
Flavours are reminiscent of white stone fruit with delightful soft texture ensuring a long commanding finish. Partial malolactic fermentation and lees stirring has enhanced the texture, complexity and mouth feel allowing it to match most entrée dishes and seafood.
It is an accurate reflection of Martinborough’s unique terroir. Cellar for up to five years or more, successfully.
The partners of Escarpment Vineyard are proud to release the eighth vintage of our Kupe Chardonnay. The season was an ideal, typical Martinborough summer and has given us perfectly ripe fruit. Grown on the Martinborough Terraces’ at our Te Muna Road site where free draining alluvial gravels have yielded the complex mineral flavours we expect. It was barrel fermented using indigenous yeast in 20% new oak and aged on fermentation lees for 10 months before being bottled in September 2015.
Showing ripe but restrained fruit, intelligent use of oak and a flinty mineral backbone it is at the pinnacle of the style in New Zealand. It will age gracefully for up to 10 years and compliment most seafood or entrée dishes.
We may stand accused of shamelessly chasing the ever-moving goalposts of the Chardonnay style bandwagon. So be it. Our clean, lean fruit driven examples of many years have been superseded by somewhat more rounded wines which show a little more oak, a lot more MLF influence and when circumstances permit, spend more time in barrel. We are rather pleased with the results.
The colour is a rich royal gold so it is no surprise that the nose is bold and complex. Bright grapefruit, soft ripe avocados, kiwi crush and butterscotch are bandied about by more mealy notes of grilled chestnut, grated nutmeg, flowering briar and wild oats. Further down the long corridors of power the old world charm kicks in: a thin scraping of vegemite, some black truffle oil and a tantalising hint of the bilge water from a clinker built dingy. Finally a sting of fine Kauri dust flying free from a hot belt sander.
The palate is defined by its power; subtle yet absolute. Under the cover of night this clandestine wine will sidle up with a nonchalant approachability while nimble fingers draw you in deeper and deeper. The fruit is peacherine and baked pear followed by spiced apple and glacé cherry. The texture is rich and creamy while the structure broad and bare chested. The mildly assertive yet seamless acidity snakes its way back into the deepest recesses where the agile backbone gives an urbane assurance. Imagine chewing strips of wildebeest biltong between sips of this versatile Chardonnay.
The Martinborough Vineyard Chardonnay is often described as a Chardonnay lover’s Chardonnay. Aromas of tropical fruit intertwine with notes of citrus, toast and popcorn that bring to mind the characteristics of great Chardonnay. Careful use of new oak has created a wine that is finely grained and focused, yet shows power, depth of flavour and a lovely mineral core.
This is a rich style of Chardonnay with the accent on strong fruit flavours. Ripe melon, nectarine and summer peach aromas abound with oak hints of cedar and spice and a long, full, yet soft finish. Elegant with fine texture and a smooth finish.
Carol & Geoff Read apply a very personal, hands on approach to their vineyard and winemaking, doing it all themselves. Only the best fruit is picked each season, and fermented with minimal intervention in French oak.
Only Chardonnay is produced, as that is what Carol & Geoff like to drink!
A direct reflection of vintage and dedication, the Mystree Chardonnay always shows intense and complex flavours with great length, weight and excellent balance.
Mature Mendoza Chardonnay vines on own roots from original plantings in 1988 are the key to this wine. Rich, textured, elegant, single-vineyard Chardonnay with ability to improve in the bottle for up to 10 years.
Exhibits typical regional characteristics of white peach and nectarine with notes of vanilla and spice. The wine is rich and intense with a persistent yet soft finish. Early drinking style but will cellar for 2-3 years.

"Brilliant light golden-yellow colour, paler on the edge. The nose has rich, ripe aromas of yellow stonefruits and citrus fruit with tropical fruit notes, harmoniously melded with creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak elements, along with a little lemon-curd MLF. The nose possesses depth and a soft density. Medium-bodied, the palate has good intensity and concentration of ripe yellow stonefruit and citrus fruit flavours entwined with creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak notes. The palate is fine-textured and smooth-flowing with fresh acidity and some underlying power providing good linearity. Some lemon-curd MLF emerges as the wine carries to a dry, light-textured finish. This is an elegantly concentrated, rich citrus-fruited Chardonnay".
Lifted fruit aromas of nectarines, apricots and pineapple have integrated with fermentation in oak to produce a wine of great texture. Extended yeast contact has leant itself to a creamy palate, with almond and toasted bread aromas. This wine shows depth of fruit and great palate weight that is enjoyable now or cellar for the next 6 years.
A refreshing, finely concentrated Chardonnay.
Medium-full bodied, the palate has well-packed and deeply concentrated flavours of stonefruit and citrus fruit with tropical fruit exoticism, entwined with nutty, toasty oak and complex flinty reduction along with lemon-curd MLF. The mouthfeel is rounded and the flavours form a fine-textured, firm core with good alcoholic drive and underlying fresh acidity. The flavours recede a little as the wine carries to a long and sustained finish. This is a well-concentrated, up-front Chardonnay with stonefruit, citrus fruit and tropical fruit flavours intermixed with nutty and toasty oak with flinty detail.
The John Martin Chardonnay is crafted from TK's best vineyard parcels. Succulent aromas of melon and white nectarine are balanced with almond and floral notes. A rich, yet elegant palate leads to a long, rounded finish.
