Vineyard - Hidden Vineyard - southern end of Te Muna Valley, 95-110m above sea level, vines were planed in 2001. Alluvial soild=s similar to Martinborough Terrace but heavier soil due to being closer to river. Currently 1896 vines.
Our 2025 Pinot is a blend of two parcels from our hidden vineyard block - half is from the Dijon part of the vineyard and half from the Abel and UCD5 clones we have planted.
Winemaking - What we really enjoy about our vineyard is that it is a much cooler climate site than town (10km away) and the way that this shows through in the fruit ripeness spectrum. We are picking late - often 4 weeks after similar clones of Pinot are picked around town.
There is still that distinctive spice and savouriness that Martinborough Pinot posesses but our site produces PInot's with cooler fruit notes, more bright red cherries, less dark fruit and lovely floral perfume - all reflective of our special site.
Our winemaking aims to reflect and embrace these characters - hence no whole bunch, natural yeast fermentation, minimal plunging, 12 months aged in French oak barrels (only 1 and 3 year old barrels used - no new oak) no fining and no filtration.
Vintage - Will go down as one of the biggest and earliest harvests on record. Looking back there were two factors that led to the large harvest. Firstly, the ideal settled, warm flowering conditions in spring led to a lot of berries in bunches. Secondly the wet weather over Xmas meant these already big bunches became even bigger as berries swelled in size from excess rain. It was a perfect storm that required lots of thinnning and attention in January to get the vineyard into the shape we wanted. thankfullythe lovely later long summer and autumn weather enabled the grapes to get all physiologically ripe leading to wines of lovely perfume, elegance, fruit forwardness and suppleness. The Pinots aren't as deeply concentrated as the big 2024s but show a lovely prettiness that reminds us why we got into making Pinot.
