Te Hera Estate vineyard and winery is the passion of John Douglas, one of the very first to plant out at Te Muna Road in 1996, primarily in Pinot Noir. John says that since then they have been learning to manage the vines, make the wine and run a business and finally they have moved past the development phase into the consolidation and refinement phase, having gained clarity around what they aim to achieve and how to do it.
John, his family and their label, take inspiration from their ancestors, both Maori and Pakeha, who undertook heroic voyages in sailing ships, in difficult conditions to reach these shores of New Zealand in the 1840’s, seeking a new life for themselves and their loved ones. The Te Hera journey or adventure has been to take a small piece of bare land and turn it into the base of a thriving small wine business.
