With this wine as the centerpiece, we have added three further wines of rarity and complexity. Together, they offer an opportunity to explore a variety that we believe will have a significant impact in Martinborough in the years ahead, thanks to its tannin structure, purity of fruit, and ability to express site.
The true measure of how well a variety is suited to a particular region is not how it performs in a great year, but how it expresses itself in a less-than-perfect season. A large part of this equation lies in the hands of a winemaker with clear and uncompromising quality goals. In this instance, Hiro Kusuda offers a level of precision and focus rarely seen in New Zealand.
Delicate, poised, and beautifully balanced, this wine is far removed from Australia's more brawling, rambunctious, high-octane styles. Instead, we find a graceful expression, perfumed and almost Pinot-like in character. Moderate cellaring will allow its subtleties and nuances to emerge fully.
Kai and Marion Schubert craft excellent wines from their vineyards in Martinborough and Dakins Road, approximately 25 minutes to the north. European in style and made to accompany food, these wines exhibit earthy, savoury flavours and firm tannins that reward patient ageing.
We have been impressed by Moy Hall's wines and the steady gains in quality achieved over recent vintages. This Syrah will benefit from a couple of years in the cellar, allowing it to settle and mature. Expressive and sourced from an absolute cracker of a vintage, it provides a compelling counterpoint to Kusuda's quieter eloquence.
This is Palliser's second release of Syrah. Stylishly made and tightly focused, it is a compelling expression of Syrah in a New Zealand context. Like the Moy Hall, it will benefit from further ageing. Syrah has become a rising star in the Wairarapa as more producers come to understand its particular challenges and strengths, while also looking towards a future that may provide a warmer and more reliable home for this variety.

For clients who would prefer to collect their case at a later date, we are happy to store six-packs in a secure, temperature-stable facility used by many of Martinborough's leading winemakers. Storage is available for NZD $28per month, payable upon collection from Martinborough Wine Merchants. Please provide at least seven days' notice prior to collection.
