Established in 1989, Alexander Vineyard is located in the heart of the famed Martinborough Terrace, on the free-draining gravels of the old river terraces created by the Ruamahanga River in the internationally renowned wine village of Martinborough.
The vineyard extends to five hectares, planted mainly with Pinot Noir and some Merlot, in high-density rows with low trellising to maximise sunlight interception to the vines. This, together with the gravel soils and the dominant north-westerly winds, ensures low-yielding vines with intensely flavoured fruit.
Alexander Wine’s philosophy in the winery is one of guidance rather than manipulation of the winemaking process. This includes gentle basket pressing of fruit, followed by careful barrel selection and blending, to produce wines of depth, elegance and complexity suitable for cellaring.
