Bijou Estate is a boutique vineyard nestled on a stony alluvial terrace above the Ruamahanga River, eight kilometres north of Masterton, with impressive views of the Opaki Plains and the Tararua Ranges. Established in 1998 it's regarded as the northernmost vineyard in the Wairarapa, and possibly, the most elevated. The elevation gives it the additional advantage of being relatively frost free at the critical stages of grape development. Small quantities of quality, single vineyard, single vintage wines are produced.
1998 saw the initial planting of Pinot Gris, followed over the next four years by Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Pinot Noir, just six acres in total. The vines are hand tended, and harvest hand picked, to maximise fruit quality.
The full bodied, fruit forward Bijou Estate wines will be appreciated by the discerning wine drinker and those who seek out, and value, the delights of little known boutique wines of distinction.
