Alastair Scott had a life-long dream to own his own winery and produce award-winning New Zealand wines. On returning home from working and living overseas, he made that dream a reality. Alastair has fond memories of the Wairarapa from his childhood, and so there was no question where he would begin his search for the best area to produce world class Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
Jane Cooper met Alastair back in 2002 and has been working in the business since that time. She was already an established winemaker with her own label and the extent of her industry knowledge and commitment to creating quality wine impressed Alastair, resulting in the birth of Matahiwi Estate. Jane has overall responsibility for all aspects of production, as well as running the winery.
This Pinot Noir has strength on the palate of ripe cherries and red fruits, licorice and leather with spicy charry aromatic oak flavours. A plush palate with dense but supple tannins in the finish. On the nose there are cassis and red berry fruits, spice with a hint of toasty/smoky oak. Tobacco and tea leaf aromas, touch of licorice.
