Urlar Estate is proudly family-owned and produces outstanding single vineyard wines using organic and biodynamic principles. Economic and environmental sustainability are their driving principles. Urlar is the Gaelic word for 'The Earth.'
Urlar's desire, is to bring an abundance of life back to their ancient soils, so you can discover the purity of flavour inherent in the land. Their own journey from the Highlands of Scotland to the stony soils and cool climate of Gladstone, Wairarapa has cemented their love for all things pure and true. Using the biodynamic farming and gardening calendar, the rhythmic influences of the sun, moon, planets and stars are recognised and worked where possible. This commitment has been recognised and rewarded recently when they won the Hills Harvest and Gallagher Innovation Awards.
The result is beautiful, clean, hand crafted wines that have not impacted negatively on the soils as they have been created.
Intriguing aromas of bright red fruits, plumstone, dried herbs and iodine. The palate is soft on entry and builds through the mid palate with savoury notes intermingled with dark fruits and spice. The texture is impressive with mouth coating tannins coming from the whole cluster inclusion. An elegant style of Pinot Noir with great power and complexity that will reward cellaring.
A barrel fermented Sauvignon Blanc that is textural rather than being all about the fruit. A brilliant pale straw colour with delicate notes of musk melon and almonds. The palate is concentrated, rich and long with flavours of stone fruit and biscotti with some lovely herbal undertones.
The finish has a minerality to it that will ensure it develops wonderfully over time.
