"Bouquet of delicate florals, passionfruit, gooseberry and green bean. The intensity of aromatics could have you mistaking this for a racy Marlborough Sav. Green bean, passionfruit lemon and a hint of stone-fruit are evident on the palate. The palate is medium bodied, with rounded mouth-feel and medium length. Juicy acidity blends in nicely with other components." - Michael Cooper
Raranga Sauvignon Blanc (“woven” in Maori) is our expression of this variety in the low yielding Martinborough region. Utilising several traditional winemaking techniques including barrel ferments with high solids juice, extended skin contact and partial malolactic fermentation. Around 15% of the fruit was fermented in contact with skins, drawing out their more complex flavours. The grape skins also contain phenolics which, combined with the natural acidity, offer a fresh back bone. These portions are woven together to produce a complex and textural wine.
Complex nose of lemon curd, citrus blossom and white peach with spicy aromatics reminiscent of cinnamon apple pie. The texture that the on-skins and barrel fermentation components bring shows itself in a suppleness creaminess, which mingles with lemon zest notes and a tangy finish.
Hand-harvested at optimum ripeness, fermented in stainless steel tank (70%) and in used French oak barrels (30%), lees ageing for 7 months. Dry white wine, food-friendly.
The wine has gentle aromas of sandalwood and pear. The palate is broad and rich, with soft pear, gentile spice and ginger. It has great textural weight, and the oak complexity complements rather than dominates the fruit. This is a beautiful food wine. The mineral backbone provides structure while juicy acidity gives the wine a long finish. Drink now, or cellar for five years.
Made from ripe grapes, grava Sauvignon Blanc has a subtle array of tropical fruit characteristics, and a soft mid palate as a result of time spent on fine lees. The wine has a long finish, is food friendly and is a surprising twist on typical New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
The 2015 grava Sauvignon Blanc was whole-bunch pressed to produce a wine with refined fruit characters and distinct minerality.
Pale straw in colour, this wine has fragrance with grapefruit, lemon, apple, gooseberries and passion fruit aromas. The palate is full-bodied and textured with flavours of citrus fruit and grapefruit, and a balanced crispy acidity.
"The nose of this wine confidently announces its depth of character with a generous splash of lemon-straw colour. In the glass it opens with a hit of smashed honeydew cantaloupe and ripe Queensland pineapple alongside white fleshed nectarine, grapefruit zest and soothing notes of camomile tea. The aroma is upswept and inline yet it speaks of many things; like snips and snails and puppy dogs tails or long sticky apron strings. Dusty talcum powder and smoking gun oil add further interest and are rounded out by fresh fennel bulb, mashed butternut squash and a hint of pickled walnut.
The wine epitomises the tantalising crossover where sweetness and charm meets stroppiness and tang. Surprisingly full across the palate with green peach and crushed pineapple flavours, it slithers sideways before flowing onward courtesy of its juicy and turbulent acidity, to achieve an edgy balance like a size 4 model in baggy dungarees. Powerful and zesty, it has a breadth of flavour that could only be controlled by a roadside guardrail while the flesh and muscle sinews which are obvious beneath the taut skin are guaranteed to rock the DJ. In the finish a flinty edge and somewhat oily texture spread smoothness and calm to the ruffled back palate. Almost the perfect aperitif, this wine will definitely get your juices flowing!" - Strat Canning - Winemaker
